William Morris (1877-1963) operated a cycle shop in Oxford and saw the need for private transport. In 1913 the Oxford was launched followed by the Cowley in 1915. Efficient production methods allowed large numbers of these cars to built before the Great War started.

After working on munitions during hostilities, Morris re-introduced improved versions of the Oxford and Cowley models after the war. These models had rounded radiators, which led to their "bullnose" name.

In 1924 Edgar Blake who had previously worked for Dunlop for 27 years undertook the day-to-day running of Morris. Blake stood down in July 1933, (by now Deputy Governing Director), to be replaced by Leonard Lord (1896-1967) who was previously Managing Director of Wolseley.

In 1928 the Minor was announced and soon became Morris's best seller. Larger cars such as the Major and Isis were also built.

The E-Series Eight and M-Series Ten were first produced in 1939 and re-introduced in 1945 virtually unchanged.

1948 saw the introduction of Alec Issigonis's Minor MM, which became the Minor II in 1952 and the Minor 1000 in 1956. The Minor series was built in many forms (Saloons, "Woodys", Vans and Pick-ups) until 1971. The millionth Morris Minor was built in the first week of January 1961 and was marked by a limited edition (350 cars) Minor in lilac with Minor 1000000 badging.

By now part of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) the Mini-Minor was launched in 1959. Again designed by Alec Issigonis this transverse engined small car was produced in many body styles.
